The Half Crown Club exists for past and present skippers in the OSTAR Single Handed Transatlantic Races.
The Club was conceived in May 1984 in a Cornish pub by Lloyd Hircock, Tim Hubbard, and Alan Wynne Thomas. As noted in the June 1988 OSTAR Programme: ‘The club is limited to all those who have competed or are entered to compete in the Single Handed Transatlantic Race. The Club has no rules, no dues, no formal meetings and no bye-laws. . . . Its sole purpose is to commemorate the spirit of high adventure, comradeship and good humour that characterise the outlook of the five original competitors in the race of 1960.’
Following the success of the 2005 Half Crown Club reunion, Tim Whitten is again organising this event for the 2009 OSTAR. In addition to reserving the date, Tim asks that you send him the e-mail addresses of any other past skippers you may be in contact with so we can inform them of the 2009 reunion.
Half Crown Club reunion, Sunday 24th May 2009
The 2009 Half Crown Club reunion is being planned for 1800 hours on Sunday 24th May in the Club House (i.e., the evening before the 2009 OSTAR start). The successful 2005 reunion was attended by 96 Half Crown Club Members (including many spouses and most skippers competing in the 2005 race).
Membership of The Half Crown Club comprises all skippers who competed one or more OSTAR; all the hundreds of competitors who entered previous races are listed (by year) on the OSTAR website.
Further details of the 2009 reunion will be sent to members in the spring of 2008 to allow travel plans to be started. Wherever possible, e-mail will be used but, regrettably, we have less than 50 viable e-mail addresses for members.
Please send your e-mail address (or other contact details) to halfcrown@rwyc.org NOW to ensure receiving details of the reunion and other Half Crown Club news. Also, please attach contact details for all other members with whom you are in contact.
In the meantime, make a note of 24th May 2009 and thank you for any help you can give in tracking down Half Crown Club Members’ current contact details.
